Deer Valley's Biggest Winter Yet Still Runs on Last Year's Lunch Seats

October 22, 2026

"This year, dining is going to be our limiter. We're going to have a lot more terrain than we can service with dining." Deer Valley President and COO Todd Bennett said that to the Park Record in November 2025, when the resort was about to nearly double in size. In the same report, he explained how the resort sets its daily cap. The limit isn't based on how much terrain is open. It's based on how many people the lodges can realistically serve for food and other services.

That rule matters even more this winter. Deer Valley is adding another lift, another 200 acres and seven new runs for the season that starts Dec. 5. The two lodges built to feed the expanded mountain won't open until winter 2027-28. The terrain has gotten ahead of the kitchens again, and anyone who skis here regularly will have an easier season if they plan around that.

What opens on December 5

Deer Valley has set Dec. 5, 2026 as its target opening day, conditions permitting. Management has said the date could move earlier or later depending on snow. The new lift this season is Hail Peak Express. Crews flew its towers in by helicopter on Sept. 9, and it carries skiers from Deer Valley East Village up to Hail Peak, on the far eastern edge of the resort. The lift has 86 chairs that move 2,400 people per hour, with 1,130 feet of vertical rise.

According to the Park Record, Hail Peak is the 11th new lift since 2024. Its seven runs are groomed beginner, intermediate and advanced terrain. Garrett Lang, senior director of mountain operations, compared the area to Flagstaff Mountain on the resort's western side. One of the new runs, "Hill Yeah," honors Hill Air Force Base and ties into the resort's Salute to Service program.

With Hail Peak, the resort's 2026-27 stats come to 4,500 skiable acres, 32 aerial lifts, 209 runs and 932 acres of snowmaking. Some terrain from last winter's expansion has never been skied at all. Communications manager Riley Elliot told the Park Record that thin snow kept part of the new terrain near the Pioche and Neptune lifts closed last season, and the resort hopes to open it this year.

The lodges are a season behind

Deer Valley's own September release puts both new lodges in the following season.

Project What it adds Scheduled
Hail Peak Express 200 acres, 7 runs Winter 2026-27
East Village Lodge Ski school, rentals, food hall Winter 2027-28
Park Peak Lodge Live Fire Food Hall with about 860 seats, roughly 2,500 lunches served Winter 2027-28
East Village commercial core More than 70 shops and restaurants 2028-29 ski season

Park Peak Lodge sits at the top of the East Village Gondola. Its core and shell are due to be finished this fall, and the dining room, restaurant and bar will be built out over the coming winter. Once open, the Live Fire Food Hall is expected to seat roughly 860 and serve about 2,500 guests at lunch. For one more season, those seats will be a construction site.

Year two of the temporary setup

Last November, Deer Valley described its stopgap plan to the Park Record. Until the permanent East Village lodge was finished, the resort would run out of a large structure at the base "for the next two seasons." That building serves as the main skier services hub, with guest services, rentals, retail and seating for more than 100 diners indoors and outdoors, according to Jacob Musyt, vice president of food and beverage. KPCW reported the temporary facility at 8,000 square feet, with dining, rentals and retail, and said ski school would be available at East Village. Deer Valley's restaurant listings show the East Village Restaurant open daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The resort added two more things last winter to handle lunch. A dining tent at Silver Lake Beach stayed up all season as extra seating for Silver Lake Lodge. The resort also started "corduroy lunch," which kept a selection of freshly groomed runs closed until noon so skiers would have a reason to ski through the lunch rush. Musyt described the strategy he'd use himself: "If I didn't work here, I'd probably sleep in, grab some chili, and then get fresh corduroy around 12 o'clock." The resort hasn't yet said whether the tent or corduroy lunch will return for 2026-27. With the same lodge situation as last year and more terrain on the map, they're the arrangements to watch for as opening day gets closer.

Where Hail Peak fits in the day

Hail Peak's location makes it useful early in the day. It sits close to the East Village parking lot, which has 1,200 spaces and was free all day as of the Park Record's September report. Complimentary trams run from the lot toward the lift hub. Lang said the lift is a good choice for early-morning runs or for starting the day before heading across the rest of the mountain. The chairs on Hail Peak and the other eastern lifts have higher backs and smoother suspension.

Since dining sets the limit, it helps to decide where you'll eat before you clip in. Here are the options the resort and the neighboring hotel list:

  • East Village side: East Village Restaurant in the temporary base building. The resort's restaurant page lists noodle bowls, salads, sandwiches, breakfast items and hot drinks. Grand Hyatt Deer Valley lists Remington Hall for breakfast and dinner, The Lounge at Remington Hall for lunch and bar service, and Double Blacks for coffee. Hours are seasonal and worth checking before you go.
  • Mid-mountain: Silver Lake Restaurant runs a cafeteria and a pho station. Royal Street Café serves lunch, and Cushing's Cabin serves during the day.
  • Upper mountain: Empire Canyon Grill serves lunch.
  • Snow Park base: Snow Park Restaurant has a cafeteria and après service, and Fireside Dining serves in the evening.

The resort currently lists all of these as closed for the season. Their 2026-27 hours will be posted closer to opening.

The cap shows up in ticket sales as well. Deer Valley limits how many lift tickets it sells each day and recommends buying ahead, especially over the holidays. The Utah Limited Pass for 2026-27 covers Monday through Thursday, has peak-date blackouts, and requires proof of Utah residency.

Dates to keep

Snowmaking usually comes first. Senior snowmaking manager Brett Hawksford told the Park Record that the right mix of cold and humidity typically arrives at the end of October. Some of that water will come from a new 10-million-gallon reservoir southwest of Park Peak Lodge.

The first week of the season is Kids Ski Free Week. TownLift reports that from Dec. 5 through Dec. 11, children 12 and under get a free daily ticket, one per paying adult, and rental discounts have to be booked by phone. Families should also watch for a planned snow-feature zone off Pioche Express, tentatively on Pirate King, along with rollers on Humbug and a family area on McHenry.

The FIS Freestyle World Cup comes back Jan. 28 through 30, 2027, with moguls, dual moguls and aerials on the courses used for the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games, according to the Park Record. The resort's event page says the events are free and open to the public, but you'll need a free digital ticket to enter after 5 p.m.

Parking details are still coming. The UDOT Wasatch Back recreation page says Deer Valley's 2026-27 parking information will be released closer to the season. It lists five Snow Park lots, East Village's 1,200 spaces and overflow buses from Richardson Flat every 15 minutes. Deer Valley called last season's premium paid parking at Jordanelle a 25/26 pilot, and it hasn't announced whether the pilot continues.

The schedule after this winter is already set. The East Village Lodge and Park Peak Lodge open for the 2027-28 season, and more than 70 shops and restaurants are planned for East Village by the 2028-29 ski season.

If you own near Deer Valley or are considering East Village, the lodges and storefronts coming over the next two seasons will change how the eastern side of the resort works day to day.
